Marko Karadžić’s Resignation

September 30, 2010

Human and Minority Rights Ministry State Secretary Marko Karadžić has resigned because he disagrees with the policy conducted by Human and Minority Rights Minister Svetozar Čiplić. Most media reported on Karadžić’s resignation, but, unfortunately, did not go into the reasons for it.Yet another marginalisation of educated, courageous and capable people in Serbia is absolutely inadmissible in the view of the Belgrade Centre for Human Rights. All of us need to focus our energy on protecting and supporting individuals like Marko Karadžić because problems like the one he experienced in his work are encountered by all protectors of human rights, those in state institutions and non-governmental organisations alike. The attitude towards Marko Karadžić clearly shows that those who perform their duties conscientiously i.e. do their jobs, can expect to be marginalised, harassed and treated as an obstacle on the path to peaceful survival.

By resigning, Marko Karadžić has shown responsibility not seen in Serbia’s political life for a long time. He has shown that he does not want to hold a post that serves no purpose.

The Belgrade Centre for Human Rights hopes that his resignation will not further lull the public but quite the opposite, that it will reinforce the principles Karadžić had advocated in his work and awaken those who should fight for them.
