Three decades of unwavering commitment to the promotion and protection of human rights in Serbia were marked at a ceremony held on Friday, October 3, at the Miljenko Dereta Space in Belgrade.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"post-9423 media-9423\" class=\"align-none\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.bgcentar.org.rs\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/DSC_0235.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/figure>\n<p>From the founders who established the Centre in 1995 to today\u2019s team, colleagues, partners, and friends gathered to honor to three decades of tireless, persistent and principled efforts in advancing and safeguarding human rights and the rule of law in Serbia.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"post-9427 media-9427\" class=\"align-none\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.bgcentar.org.rs\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/DSC_0254.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/figure>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The celebration was also a moment of reflection \u2014 a chance to look back on everything the BCHR has accomplished over the years, and to recognize the resilience it has shown in times when the treatment of human rights defenders still echoes the challenges of the 1990s, the very decade in which the Centre was founded.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"post-9399 media-9399\" class=\"align-none\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.bgcentar.org.rs\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/DSC_0060.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/figure>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\" data-start=\"1210\" data-end=\"1468\">The Belgrade Centre for Human Rights was established in 1995 by Vesna Petrovi\u0107, Jelena Peji\u0107, Nevena Vu\u010dkovi\u0107 \u0160ahovi\u0107, Dragor Hiber, Vojin Dimitrijevi\u0107, Konstantin Obradovi\u0107, Ga\u0161o Kne\u017eevi\u0107, Branislav Milinkovi\u0107, Milan Paunovi\u0107, and Slobodanka Boba Nedovi\u0107.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"post-9401 media-9401\" class=\"align-none\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.bgcentar.org.rs\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/DSC_0071.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/figure>\n<p>Guided by the vision and integrity of Professor Vojin Dimitrijevi\u0107 \u2014 a distinguished scholar of international law and the BCHR\u2019s long-time director \u2014 the organization has, for thirty years, been devoted to upholding human rights and the rule of law as the foundation of every modern democratic society.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"post-9407 media-9407\" class=\"align-none\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.bgcentar.org.rs\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/DSC_0089.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/figure>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\" data-start=\"1886\" data-end=\"2408\">Throughout its history, the Centre has worked tirelessly to raise public awareness about the importance of protecting individual freedoms, to educate generations of students and professionals, to publish textbooks and books as Serbia\u2019s leading publisher in the field of human rights, to provide free legal aid and support to citizens, and to ensure the most comprehensive and consistent reporting on the state of human rights in Serbia.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"post-9415 media-9415\" class=\"align-none\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.bgcentar.org.rs\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/DSC_0130.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/figure>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The dedicated work of numerous individuals\u2014from diverse professional backgrounds but united by a shared commitment to human rights\u2014has made the Belgrade Centre for Human Rights one of the most respected and influential civil society organizations in the country.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"post-9413 media-9413\" class=\"align-none\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.bgcentar.org.rs\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/DSC_0120.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/figure>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\" data-start=\"2676\" data-end=\"2976\">For three decades, our mission has remained the same \u2014 to promote the idea of human rights, to empower citizens to stand for their freedoms, and to create a society where dignity, equality, and justice are respected and protected for all.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"post-9411 media-9411\" class=\"align-none\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.bgcentar.org.rs\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/DSC_0108.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/figure>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\" data-start=\"2612\" data-end=\"2905\">In carrying forward the values, ideas, and legacy of Professor Dimitrijevi\u0107, who passed away on 5 October 2012, the Centre has been guided by his words: \u201cThe struggle against the reign of terror must be borne by the brave and the dignified within every community.\u201d (from his book Reign of Terror: An Essay on Human Rights and State Terror).<\/p>\n<figure id=\"post-9393 media-9393\" class=\"align-none\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.bgcentar.org.rs\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/DSC_0037.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/figure>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\" data-start=\"2612\" data-end=\"2905\">Today, when the fundamental principles of democracy \u2014 the separation of powers, the rule of law, and human rights \u2014 are being profoundly undermined, this mission is more urgent than ever.
