Dušan Pokuševski, Program Director at the Belgrade Centre for Human Rights, participated in the launch of Amnesty International’s annual report on the state of human rights. The report was presented at an event held in Sofia on April 29, organized by Amnesty International Bulgaria.
Pokuševski spoke during a panel discussion titled “Rights in Action: Unwavering Voices for Justice,” which focused on the role of civic movements in the region and their connection to the broader European context. The discussion provided an opportunity to highlight the ongoing student protests in Serbia, which have continued for over five months. The protests were sparked by a tragic incident in Novi Sad, where 16 people lost their lives when the recently renovated train station’s canopy collapsed.
Throughout the demonstrations, students—supported by a large number of citizens—have been demanding justice, rule of law, media freedom, functional institutions, accountability of public officials, and effective measures against corruption in Serbia.
Marie Struthers, Director for Eastern Europe and Central Asia at Amnesty International, presented the report’s key findings and global trends, including the rise of authoritarian practices, the impact of the Trump administration, and the growing disregard for international judicial institutions.
