First Permanent Residence Granted to a Refugee from Burundi

For the first time in Serbia, permanent residence has been granted to a refugee from Burundi. This was made possible by amendments to the Law on Foreigners, which came into effect on 1 February 2024.

The changes to the law allow individuals who have been granted refugee status in Serbia to apply for permanent residence after three years of living in the country.

This is exactly what a client of the Belgrade Centre for Human Rights did, becoming the first refugee in Serbia to receive permanent residence.

Since 2012, the Belgrade Centre for Human Rights has been providing free legal assistance to asylum seekers and persons granted international protection in Serbia.
