Donor: Neighbourhood Programe of the Danish Ministry of Foreign Affairs

The result of this project was comprehensive human rights report with the detailed and relevant information on the legislation, practice and citizen’s attitudes toward the human rights in the whole region. Report included recommendations for the improvement of legislation gaps and failures in respect of human rights standards, comparison of the domestic laws with international human rights instruments which are binding and the case law before the international courts and tribunals affecting the human rights situation in the countries in the region.First part of the Report is the overview of the human rights situation in the BHRN countries drafted by the BCHR editor. It contains the main findings in human rights situation characteristics in each of the BHRN sub-regions and the regional overview where general conclusions are drawn. Generally, all the BHRN states are facing the problems of the lack of comprehensive incorporation of human rights guarantees enshrined in ratified international documents in their national legal systems. The most criticism the authors addressed at the inefficient protection of the right to a fair trial, violations of the prohibition of torture, inhuman or degrading treatment or punishment, disrespect for the right to peaceful enjoyment of property, relatively frequent violations of the prohibition of discrimination and the poor state of economic and social rights. At the end, the Report contains the table of international treaties and other international human rights instruments ratified by the countries involved.
