Developing and Strengthening Democracy and Human Rights Culture in the Region of Sandžak Through Human Rights Education

Project was drafted together with the members of the Governing Board of the Belgrade Centre for Human Rights and the activists in the branch office in Pribroj that was established at the beginning of 2003. The main aim of this project was to open the Office of the Belgrade Centre in Priboj and to help the activists to become independent local NGO. The office was equipped on the beginning of the 2003 and stated to work. Necessary office equipment was bought and installed at Priboj office.During 2003 there were four two-day seminars in Priboj. Programmes for the seminars were made on the basis of the suggestions of Priboj office and its understanding of local needs and priorities in developing fertile ground for enhancing human rights culture and civil society values among youth population in this region. The process of the selection of the participants consisted of application forms, letter of motivation and phone interviews. Candidates for the seminar were high school students, university students and local journalists from Prijepolje, Nova Varoš and Priboj. The program and applications for the seminars were available at the office of Priboj and were also advertised on local TV and radio stations in target towns. Program of the seminar included lectures, panel discussions, workshops and simulations together with multimedia programs. Content of the program of the seminar consisted of basic human rights themes. Lecturers were human rights activists, local NGO activists and lecturers of the Belgrade Centre for Human Rights. 

After second seminar group of 40 participants visited Belgrade. The participants were very motivated and eager to discuss some topics that occurred during the program, especially the following lectures: the truth, the responsibility and the reconciliation and extremism. After the fourth seminar, second visit to Belgrade was organized. During these 4 two-day seminars around 100 young people from Priboj and neighboring towns participated in this part of the project activities. 

The final task for the project was to bring the most successful and motivated people for nine day long School of Human Rights in Belgrade. The process of selection of participants was thorough and competitive. There were 24 selected participants for the School. They finished course and started to collaborate with the branch office of the BCHR in Priboj.
